Network Update (Node PVE12)

November 08, 2025 at 08:29 (8 months ago)

We want to inform you that the PVE12 environment has recently exceeded the capacity of its primary Linux bridge due to the number of tap interfaces surpassing the kernel limits of the bridge interface.

To maintain continuous connectivity and support the growing number of virtual interfaces, we have deployed a secondary data plane. This new plane is bridged to the primary, allowing existing and new connections to function seamlessly.

Technical Details:

  • The primary bridge reached the maximum supported number of kernel tap devices, causing potential limitations for new virtual network interfaces.
  • A secondary Linux bridge was added and bridged to the primary, effectively extending the available data plane.
  • Both bridges share the same underlying physical NICs via a bonded or bridged configuration, ensuring no disruption to traffic.
  • Taps created by virtual machines or containers will now be distributed across the primary and secondary bridges as needed, staying within kernel limits.
  • The secondary data plane has been tested under load and is currently stable without issues.

If you experience any connectivity problems, please submit a support ticket with as much detail as possible (VM/container names, timestamps, interface names, and logs) so our team can investigate promptly.

We appreciate your patience as we scale PVE12 to handle the increasing number of network endpoints while maintaining high availability.
